It's one of the first questions every homeowner asks, and one of the hardest to answer from a website: what will an interior designer cost? The honest answer is that it depends on what you need the designer to do. A single room refresh and a full-home renovation are different projects with different teams, timelines and levels of risk.

This guide explains how interior design fees work in Calgary, what shapes the investment, and how to compare studios fairly, so you can plan with confidence before you book anyone.

The three ways Calgary interior designers charge

Most studios use one of three fee models, sometimes in combination.

1. Hourly rates. Common for small jobs, colour consultations and quick advice. Simple to understand, but hard to predict on larger projects, because the final number depends on how many decisions, revisions and site visits the project needs.

2. Fixed design fees. The designer scopes the project, then quotes one fee for a defined set of deliverables: plans, selections, drawings and specifications. This is the clearest model for homeowners, because you know the design investment before work begins.

3. A percentage of construction or production costs. Often used for project management and full-service work, where the designer also coordinates trades, orders and installation. The percentage usually decreases as the project grows, because larger projects carry more efficiency of scale.

At HAUS Interiors we use fixed design fees, set out in a written proposal, and a sliding project management fee on production costs for the projects we manage or build. You can see our starting fees for each service on our services page.

What shapes the investment

Two projects with the same square footage can carry very different design fees. These are the factors that move the number most:

  • Scope. One room, one floor or the whole home? Each added space brings more drawings, selections and coordination.

  • Structural and layout changes. Moving walls, plumbing or kitchens requires construction drawings and closer coordination with trades and engineers.

  • Level of detail. Custom millwork, built-ins and bespoke furniture take far more design time than ready-made pieces.

  • Procurement. Sourcing, ordering, tracking and receiving every item is a service in itself, and a significant one on a furnished home.

  • Project management. Whether the designer simply hands over drawings, or stays accountable for the schedule, the trades and the final result.

  • Timeline. Compressed schedules need more people working in parallel.

What you should receive for the fee

A professional design fee should buy clarity, not just pictures. Before construction begins, you should expect:

  • a written brief that captures how you live and what the project must achieve

  • a design direction or mood board, with real material samples tested in your own light

  • scaled floor plans and furniture layouts

  • 3D renders, so nothing is a surprise

  • finish and fixture selections, with specifications

  • issued-for-construction drawings the trades can build from

  • an estimate of production costs, so the full project investment is visible early

When these are complete before demolition, the risk of costly changes mid-build drops sharply. That is where a good designer pays for themselves: in the mistakes that never happen.

Designer only, or design and build?

In Calgary you can hire an interior designer and a general contractor separately, or work with a single design-build studio that does both.

Separate teams can work well, but the hand-off between the designer's drawings and the contractor's site is where most change orders begin. Two firms, two schedules and two points of contact also put more of the coordination on you.

A design-build studio keeps design, procurement, trades and installation under one roof, with one accountable lead. Decisions are made once, and the finished home matches the drawings. Read more about how we work in our process.

How to compare interior design quotes in Calgary

When you're comparing studios, ask each one:

  1. What exactly is included? Drawings, renders, selections, procurement, site visits and installation are often priced differently.

  2. Is the design fee fixed or open-ended?

  3. Who manages the trades, and who is accountable if the schedule slips?

  4. How are product and furniture purchases handled? Are trade pricing and markups transparent?

  5. Can I see a sample proposal and a finished project like mine?

  6. What happens if I want changes after drawings are approved?

A lower fee that excludes procurement and project management can end up costing more once you add those services, or the time you spend doing them yourself.

Where to start

The most reliable way to understand the investment for your home is a design consultation. At HAUS Interiors, a Calgary interior design and build studio, we visit your home, walk through every space with you, and listen to how you live. Within five business days you receive a written proposal with the brief, a design direction and a clear fee for each stage. The consultation fee is credited in full toward your design fee when you go ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Is an interior designer worth the cost in Calgary?
On renovation projects, usually yes. A complete design before construction prevents the change orders, delays and mismatched finishes that cost far more than the fee.

Do interior designers charge for a first consultation?
Many do. At HAUS Interiors the in-home consultation is a paid working session, and the fee is credited toward your design fee when you proceed.

What's the difference between an interior designer and a decorator?
A decorator focuses on furnishings, colour and styling. An interior designer also plans layouts, specifies finishes and produces drawings that trades build from.
